City Schools to Close Wednesday; County Schools Will Be Open
Klamath Falls City Schools will be closed for students Wednesday with the district citing insufficient numbers of available staff that day. At least 200 city schools staff will be taking part in a day of action to promote more education funding from the Oregon Legislature, according to Paul Hillyer, superintendent of city schools.
Klamath County School District schools will remain open Wednesday, with a rally planned for 4 p.m. with a place to be determined, according to Superintendent Glen Szymoniak. Szymoniak said he plans to attend the rally to show support for teachers and district employees.
DEQ Denies Jordan Cove Water Quality Certification
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality denied a water quality certification to the Jordan Cove LNG pipeline Monday. The certification is required for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to issue permits for the project, according to a press release.
However, DEQ’s action is being made “without prejudice.” This means that the applicant may reapply for the certification, and submit additional information that could result in a different decision.
The proposed 239-mile pipeline is to run from Malin to Coos Bay, where it would feed natural gas to a plant that would convert it to liquid natural gas for shipment in tankers overseas.
Movie “Phoenix, Oregon” Premieres in Klamath Falls

Joma Films’ “Phoenix, Oregon,” an independent film directed by Gary Lundgren, produced by Annie Lundgren, and filmed mostly at Barry Hanscam’s bowling center, Hanscam’s, in Klamath Falls, will take you there. It hasn’t changed too much from it’s original days as Lucky Lanes, which provided a perfect backdrop for the movie.
The film locally was second at the box office only to “Avengers: Endgame” over the weekend, according to Kim Piper, executive producer of “Phoenix, Oregon” and local film enthusiast in Klamath Falls.
If you missed the premiere of “Phoenix, Oregon” in Klamath Falls on Thursday evening, the film continues to show this week through Thursday at Pelican Cinema with showtimes of 3, 6:10 and 8:40 p.m.
