The preseason NBA play rolls on and the Portland Trail Blazers put together a great night on Wednesday in Utah against the Jazz, winning 126-118.
Portland’s Hassan Whiteside and Zach Collins were able to exploit mismatches against smaller lineups for much of the game, sophomore Anfernee Simons held his own on both ends of the floor against Utah’s Mike Conley and Mario Hezonja provided energy, scoring and playmaking off the bench.
For the first time during preseason play, the team displayed many of the new wrinkles and improvements they’ve been talking about since the start of training camp.
But more than that, Wednesday’s game was a reminder of what everyone should already know: The Blazers will go as far as Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum take them. That much was obvious with the backcourt duo combining for 53 points in the game in Utah.

Sports betting is on! Yesterday, the Oregon Lottery launched its sports betting app, Scoreboard.
The app will allow people within the state of Oregon to place legal wagers on professional sports and is the agency’s first venture into online sales and gameplay.
The lottery’s website crashed the day before the launch, but Oregon Lottery spokesman Matt Shelby said the issue wasn’t related to the app.
The Oregon Lottery was supposed to launch the app in time for football season, but the rollout was delayed. Chinook Winds, a Lincoln City casino, opened a sports betting lounge in late August, beating the Oregon Lottery to the market.
The Oregon Ducks head to Seattle on Saturday to take on the Washington Huskies but without tight end Jacob Breeland.
Oregon’s offense suffered a hugely significant loss this past Friday in their 45-3 win over Colorado. It turned out to be the final collegiate appearance for Breeland, who suffered a season-ending knee injury.
And it’s not just any season that was ended — according to midseason all-America teams released by nearly a half-dozen media outlets Tuesday, Breeland was the best tight end in the Football Bowl Subdivision so far this fall.
Breeland had 26 receptions
during Oregon’s 5-1 start to the season, tied for the team lead with Jaylon Redd.
His 405 receiving yards were first on the team, and Breeland led all FBS tight
ends with six touchdown receptions through six games.
Ducks coach Mario Cristobal is
taking steps to make sure the Ducks are ready for this weekend’s game.
Not only is No. 14 Oregon facing a ranked rival, No. 25 Washington, but the Ducks are going on the road to do so, on a weekend when rain is in the forecast. So Cristobal has had crowd noise piped in for practices this week, and though the comfort of the Moshofsky Center loomed over Wednesday’s workout, the Ducks practiced outdoors amid scattered rain showers. Hear the game on 1240AM and 106.5FM The Winner, CBS Sports Radio in Klamath Falls from Wynne Broadcasting.
Oregon Tech’s women made a limited improvement Tuesday in the second round of the Sonoma State Fall Invitational golf tournament at the Foxtail Golf Course.
Because of a best round of 301 by Biola University, however, OIT slipped to seventh place in the team race of the 13-school meet.
The Hustlin’ Owls finished seven strokes behind Biola in a meet which featured, for the most part, NCAA Division II schools.
Reser Stadium in Corvallis is getting a remodel of the west side of the stadium, which is expected to be the most expensive construction project in Oregon State University history, formally began to take shape Tuesday.
Oregon State is looking for proposals from a facility development program specialist to provide oversight for renovation, expansion and new construction of Reser Stadium’s west side.
Retooling Reser began in 2005, when the east side was completely remodeled, followed 10 years later by reconstruction of the Valley Football Center, which overlooks the north end of the stadium.
The last piece is the stadium’s west side, originally built in 1953. The west side currently seats 16,160 for events. Reser Stadium’s capacity is 43,154.
