What a debut he’s having! Seth Brown, born and raised in Klamath Falls, and a high school graduate of North Medford High, continues to have a hot bat for the Oakland A’s.
The A’s called up Brown hoping he could just hold down the fort in the absence of Stephen Piscotty. But with just eight games into his Major League career, Brown has surpassed those expectations, positioning himself as an unlikely hero down the MLB playoff stretch.
The rookie outfielder drew another start in left field Tuesday and wasted no time endearing himself to the Coliseum faithful in his first game in Oakland in a 7-5 win over the Angels.
Brown tied an Oakland single-game record with two triples, including a go-ahead three-bagger off Noe Ramirez in the sixth that put the A’s on top for good. The victory moved the A’s into a tie with Cleveland for the second American League Wild Card.
Brown became the first A’s rookie to record two triples in a game since Mark Ellis on Aug. 3, 2002. Brown, a local favorite for sure around these parts… is hitting .448 for Oakland.

Oakland A’s 4, L.A. Angels 0 on Wednesday.
Sean Murphy sat around patiently for three days as he waited to get his first taste of big league action after joining the A’s on Sunday as a September callup. That chance finally came Wednesday, and he wasted no time making an impact.
Murphy provided a glimpse into what the A’s believe is a bright future behind the dish for the 24-year-old catcher, showing off his power in his Major League debut with a solo blast as his first career hit in a 4-0 victory over the Angels. The win keeps Oakland percentage points ahead of Cleveland for the second American League Wild Card.
The home run came in the fifth inning off Angels reliever Jake Jewell on a 0-1 pitch to put the A’s ahead by two. Murphy belted the fastball left over the heart of the plate at 105.8 mph off the bat, the second-hardest hit ball of the night by either club, and drove it over the Coliseum’s high wall in right-center for a projected 409 feet, according to Statcast.
College football
hadn’t seen a performance like the one Jevon Holland put together last week in
more than a decade.
Stepping into the cleats of 2018 Lombardi Award
winner Ugochukwu
Amadi, the sophomore safety Holland played the nickel
position on Oregon’s defense and returned punts in last week’s season opener
against Auburn. Holland returned three punts for 131 yards — including an
81-yard return that gave Oregon possession in the red zone, before an untimely
fumble gave Auburn the ball back — and he also intercepted a pass.
No other player in college football had achieved
both of those marks — at least 130 punt return yards plus an interception — in
the same game since 2007.
The Oregon Ducks plays Nevada Saturday.
Oregon State’s football game at Hawaii this Saturday night won’t be aired on the Pac-12 Network. It won’t be on CBS or ESPN or FS1. In fact, it won’t be on television at all.
Traditionally, the home conference controls the broadcast rights. The game is in Hawaii, so the Mountain West Conference owns the rights. And so for the first time since 2011 when Washington State and Oregon State played, the Beavers won’t be anywhere on television.
However, the Pac-12 conference supports Oregon State’s decision to schedule Hawaii and declined to take an on-record stance on whether this is good for the brand of the conference or its members.
Oregon State opened with a 16 point loss to Oklahoma State, while Hawaii opened their season with an impressive win over Arizona State.
ASHLAND — Southern Oregon started its Cascade Conference title defense with its sharpest outing of the season, a 25-15, 25-19, 25-15 defeat of Oregon Tech in which the Raiders attacked at a .380 average on Wednesday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Elliott Cook went for team-highs of 10 kills and five blocks and Maddie Pernich had eight kills on 16 swings for sixth-ranked SOU (10-1 overall). The trio of Makayla Hoyt, Shelby Young and Kylie Ristvedt combined for 18 kills and just one attacking error.
The Raiders went for 10 blocks as a team, holding OIT (7-4) to a .120 average. Ashley Ripplinger led the Owls with 11 kills.
