Home runs, once the Mariners’ best friend this season, wound up a costly foe again on Tuesday as the Cubs rode three long balls to a 6-5 victory at T-Mobile Park.
Seattle still leads the Majors with 60 homers, with Edwin Encarnacion adding his eighth, but the recent trend has flipped on the Mariners as they’ve been outhomered 15-4 over their last seven games.
Kyle Schwarber delivered the deciding blast on Tuesday, launching a two-run shot into the Hit It Here Cafe in the second deck in right field — an estimated 440 feet, per Statcast — off rookie reliever Brandon Brennan in the top of the eighth.
Brennan, a Rule 5 Draft pickup who has emerged as the Mariners’ most-versatile and dependable reliever with his nasty changeup and mid-90s fastball, has been one of Seattle’s biggest surprises this year.
But the 27-year-old right-hander left a 1-0 changeup over the plate to Schwarber, and the stocky left fielder didn’t miss.
Terry Stotts has his schedule locked in through Mother’s Day. Same goes for Damian Lillard.
That would take the Portland Trail Blazers’ coach and star point guard through Game 7 of their Western Conference semifinal against the Denver Nuggets, themselves hunkered down and prepared to go the distance in this series, if need be.
They’ve only played one game; Game 2 is tonight at Denver’s Pepsi Center. But both sides seem resigned to the fact that the victor won’t get out of this series anytime soon.
The Blazers are undaunted after coming up short in Monday’s Game 1, when the Nuggets capitalized on 18 Portland turnovers and turned them into 23 points in a 121-113 win.
Hear the game this evening on Wynne Broadcasting’s 106.5FM/1240AM CBS Sports Radio The Winner.
It’s rivalry week in high school baseball as third-ranked Henley meets Mazama in a three game series starting today and then continuing with a doubleheader Saturday.
The Hornets lead the Skyline Conference at 8-1 while Mazama is just two games back at 6-3. The Henley softball team looks to remain undefeated in conference play, as the number one Hornets meet Mazama this week as well.
Klamath Union hopes to pick up a win on the diamond in both softball and baseball this week, as neither team has managed a win in league play thus far.
