On April 3, 2020, Klamath County Sheriff Chris Kaber and Klamath County Jail Commander Lt. BrianBryson delivered 200 sack lunches to the Klamath Gospel Mission. With current reductions in jail population, the jail inmates and staff are needing to prepare fewer meals for inmates in the jail. Sheriff Kaber and Lt. Bryson felt it would be great to further help the community by helping the Mission with additional meals for the weekend distribution that they do.
Sheriff Kaber states: “There has been a large increase in the number of meals that the Gospel Mission is preparing daily and we think this is a way to help reduce pressure on their volunteers, who are doing fantastic community work, while still helping meet a community needs during these times.”
Gospel Mission Director Kent Berry indicated that the Gospel Mission prepared over 6000 meals in the month of March, an increase of 2500-3000 over the same time last year. In addition, Berry noted that this helps them continue to serve the needs of the community on the weekends with fewer volunteer resources.
Sheriff Kaber and Lt. Bryson pitched the idea to the Board of County Commissioners earlier this week where it was warmly received. Sheriff Kaber and Lt. Bryson plan to continue this each Friday during the time that the jail population is reduced due to COVID-19.
