A couple of weeks ago, Sprague Little League from Salem was facing elimination in the Oregon State Little League tournament here Klamath Falls.
They faced elimination again over the weekend in San Bernardino, but clinched a spot in the Little League World Series with a thrilling 5-4 win in the Northwest Regional final on Saturday.
It’s the first time a team from the Salem area has reached the Little League World Series, according to the Statesman Journal.
It looked like Sprague may come up one run short. They trailed Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, 4-3 in the final inning before an unusual play gave Sprague new life.
Eight teams from the United States qualify for the Little League World Series. Sprague will represent the Northwest region, and Oregon. The tournament begins Aug. 15 and will be played in historic Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Mariners lose 1-0 to Tampa on Sunday.
Wade LeBlanc made only one bad pitch in his six innings of work Sunday, but that was enough for the Rays to eke out a 1-0 victory at T-Mobile Park as the Mariners’ offensive woes continued.
Eric Sogard homered off an 86-mph fastball that LeBlanc left over the plate on a 3-2 pitch in the fourth for the only damage off the 35-year-old southpaw. But with Ryan Yarbrough holding the Mariners to three hits in 8 2/3 innings, the Rays picked up their first three-game series sweep in Seattle since 2010.
After an off day today, the Mariners play at Detroit starting a three-game series tomorrow afternoon.
The Oregon Ducks football team capped its first full week of preseason camp with its first scrimmage on Saturday night inside Autzen Stadium. Lots of fans enjoying watching the team.
The Ducks were on the field for just over 100 plays that featured redzone work, two-minute drill and other situational. It marked practice No. 8 for Oregon, who will now have an off day on Sunday before returning to practice on Monday.
“I think we attacked it well,” said head coach Mario Cristobal.
“I think the level of competition in a lot of areas really picked up and guys are making plays. I would say it was better than a typical first scrimmage and we’re certainly making the right kind of progress.”
