The 2022 Subaru Forester – The Outdoorsy Choice for a Small SUV!

Car expert Edmunds says Suburu’s 2022 Forester is a top choice for an outdoorsy, small SUV: “It can go places most rivals can’t thanks to its higher-than-average ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive. It’s also packed with standard safety features and offers a generous amount of cargo space.”

New Wilderness model is optimized for outdoors conditions

New for the 2022 Forester are upgraded roof rails to support more weight, maximum towing capacity bumped up to 3,000 pounds, and a new Wilderness trim. The Wilderness has a slight suspension lift, giving it a total clearance of 9.2 inches. You also get a front skid plate, chunky all-terrain tires and a few styling enhancements that set the Wilderness apart from other Foresters. These include hexagonal LED fog lights and a flat-black hood that cuts glare in sunny conditions.

There’s a full-size spare under the floor of the cargo area, which can be a blessing when you have a flat in the middle of the woods. Inside, one big plus for the Wilderness is its StarTex water-resistant upholstery, optimized for all the muddy outdoors exploits that such a vehicle was made for.

All Foresters use a 2.5-liter flat-four with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, and the Wilderness gets a different continuously variable transmission with a wider ratio spread. Other Foresters have seven manually selectable ratios, and the Wilderness has eight, along with a lower first gear ratio.

A link between on-road refinement and off-road heroism

According to Car and Driver, the Forester is “A missing link between on-road refinement and off-road heroism. You get some real off-pavement ability, without dragging around a bunch of truck components that are great for the trail but useless on dry pavement. It’s tall and upright, great outward visibility, nicely appointed cabin, deliberate in its responses.”

MotorTrend says,“The Forester’s boxy styling ensures excellent outward visibility, as well as plenty of headroom inside the cabin. There’s ample legroom for three people in the rear, and cargo space is similarly generous. The rear doors open wide, making it easier to load child seats. Practicality is a hallmark of the Subaru Forester. Boasting a spacious interior and a smooth, quiet ride, this small crossover is a strong contender in its segment.”

Six trim levels and tons of options

The Forester comes in six trim levels, with pricing that starts at around $26,000 for the base model, and a ton of upgrade options as one moves up the line. A power rear liftgate is part of an $1850 option package that includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation system and a Harman-Kardon sound system. There are no other options, but there are some dealer-installed accessories, like extra underbody armor, that make it even more able to handle offroad adventures. All Foresters come standard with AWD.
