Among the country’s best-selling vehicles in any category, the Toyota Rav4 has a 2021 incarnation that includes a ton of improvements, including a more powerful engine, more safety features and a tough-looking exterior that brings a stylish edge to this very comfortable SUV.

Car and Driver magazine says “most consumers will find the 2021 RAV4’s ride comfortable and its handling agreeable. Adult passengers also will be pleased with the generous legroom in both the front and rear seats, and its cargo room is also competitive with the best among compact crossover SUVs.”

Edmunds lauds its “quiet interior and comfortable ride quality, abundant cargo and passenger space” and easy-to-use controls. It also comes with an “array of advanced drivers safety aids such as forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and an integrated backup camera with projected path.”

The distinctive exterior has a very contemporary look, with flared fenders and sharp creases, highlighted with a two-toned paint scheme with a black or icy gray roof, matte black accents, and alloy wheels. The much-improved interior is as practical as ever, with sharper driving dynamics. And in a major development this year, Android Auto is now standard along with Apple CarPlay, so non-iPhone users will be very happy.

For 2021, Toyota added a TRD off-road trim that gets more aggressive styling, twin-tube shocks, chunky 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, and gray exterior accents. There are five trim levels for the gas models, plus four trim levels for the hybrid. Under the hood of most RAV4s is a 2.5-liter inline-4 that delivers 203 horsepower mated to a direct shift 8-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) and sequential shift mode.

The RAV4 Hybrid rates up to 39 mpg combined, which is excellent compared to nearly any vehicle on the road today. The hybrid also offers a selection of 17- and 18-in. alloy wheels, a stylish available two-tone roof, and an enhanced 10-year hybrid battery warranty from the date of first use, or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The off-road version begins at around $37,000 and the basic LE FWD at around $26,000. As CarConnection notes, “If all-wheel drive is a must-do, the 2021 RAV4 Hybrid offers all-wheel drive and fuel efficiency that’s tough to match for a relatively low upfront cost.”

One of the most popular options for Southern Oregon’s four seasons is the Adventure Grade Weather Package, with a heated steering wheel, perforated heated and ventilated front seats, and rain-sensing variable intermittent windshield wipers with de-icer function.
