The somber mood following the Oregon Ducks’s football loss to Auburn in Arlington, Texas, 27-21, had shifted by Monday.
Issues that haunted the Ducks in the immediate aftermath of the game still stung, but now they are points of emphasis for practice, as the week turned over and the UO football team looked ahead to the home opener against Nevada on Saturday (4:30 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Network).
First-half turnovers and second-half breakdowns deprived the Ducks a signature win to open the 2019 season. But film review showed UO coach Mario Cristobal much to build upon moving forward.
Players reassembled Sunday for a workout prior to the Ducks’ scheduled day off from practice Monday. They’ll resume workouts Tuesday morning, with an eye toward the Wolf Pack.
When the Mariners acquired Justus Sheffield from the Yankees last offseason, they had to have hoped days like today were coming.
Seattle’s No. 9 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, has been working to make his mark in his second opportunity after a brief first stint with the club. After mixed results in his first two starts after being recalled, Sheffield put it all together in the Mariners’ 5-1 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Monday afternoon.
Seattle’s young southpaw showcased his repertoire, going toe-to-toe with Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks and showing why many have been high on him since the Indians selected him with the 31st overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft.

The Oregon State Beavers football team will try to get things even on the season as the Beavers travel to Honolulu Saturday to meet the Hawaii Rainbows.
Definitely among the handful of games on Oregon State’s schedule fans circled as a possible win prior to the season. But it will be difficult for a couple reasons. First, Hawaii is better than your average Rainbow Warriors team. Hawaii opened the season with a 45-38 win over Arizona, a game where the Rainbow Warriors committed six turnovers and still survived. Second, Hawaii is coming off an open week, while OSU has only one extra day to prepare, having played Friday night. The Beavers have had some success playing at Hawaii, as they’re 5-3 in previous trips to the islands.
Former Klamath Union and North Medford standout Seth Brown made his major league debut with the Oakland A’s last week, going 2-for-6 with an RBI in a 19-4 Oakland win against Kansas City.
Brown played in 2007 for the Klamath Falls Falcons, then moved to Medford and played two years with the Medford Mustangs.
From there, he played college baseball at Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, winning an NAIA National championship in the process. Brown spent this season with the Las Vegas Aviators AAA team, where he hit 35 home runs and had a batting average of .302.
Chase Cota, a South Medford star who led South Medford to a 6A state championship game, made the most of his opportunity in UCLA’s season opener on Thursday, catching his first collegiate career touchdown pass.
Cota’s father Chad was a four-year starter at Oregon after playing at Ashland High School, and went on to an 11 year NFL career.
Chase Cota was heavily recruited by Oregon, but chose UCLA over Oregon in a move that surprised most experts.
Following a very successful 2018-19 campaign, both the Oregon Tech men’s and women’s golf teams will be looking to make yet another trip to the NAIA National Championships in 2020.
The men and women begin the fall season and CCC play on September 9 and 10 at the CCC opener at the OGA Members Course in Woodburn, Oregon. Both teams will get an early test this fall as the men are headed to the preview event in Mesa, AZ, and the women to a DII tournament hosted by the highly ranked Sonoma State.
