Pelican Pete Goes On A Walkabout!
Pelican Elementary held their Walking School Bus event on October 4th.
The event is designed to get more kids walking to school in a group and having a good time while doing it.
They just happened to run into Pelican Pete from Klamath Union High School who helped cheer them on and walked with them.
It was a brisk and beautiful walking day, and the students were joined by school administrators and parents.
This event happens more than once in the school year promoting a healthier lifestyle and enjoyment of walking for the students. It is based on the walk and bike to school program found at www.walkbiketoschool.org/.
The students met at 7:45 at Harbor Isles Golf Course and walked/biked and even scooted and skateboarded to school.
They were accompanied by parents, grandparents, OSU Nutrition (who supplied pumpkin smoothies), KU's Pelican Pete, Project Blue Zones, and the City of Klamath Falls Mayor ~ Carol Westfall.
Beverly Leigh helped to organize the event and she sold bike helmets after school for $5 ~ she sold approximately 22 helmets.
Being a Blue Zone School, Pelican Elementary wants to encourage all their students to incorporate physical activity into their lives to form health lifelong habits! What a fun way to celebrate that by all by doing it together!
Pelican Elementary will host another walk/ride to school event in early May.
