Klamath Union High School students from Mr. McCleve's Spanish Class raise funds for an opportunity to travel to Spain next Summer.

For the past few weeks, Spanish teacher Jared McCleve has been cooking up a traditional Mexican Hominy stew called Posole Rojo to help his students raise money for an upcoming trip to Spain this next summer.

Students will be spending three weeks of their 2019 summer in San Sebastian in Northern Spain, right across from France. Once in Spain, McCleve expressed students will be staying with a host family, attending a language emersion school, and participating in many cultural activities to further immerse them in the Spanish speaking culture.

The cost for a three week trip to Northern Spain? A total of $4600. Included in the price are the airfare, three meals a day, and travel insurance in case any of the students get sick during their stay. Fortunately, with the help from Mr. McCleve's cooking skills, students can fundraise their way into reaching the $4600 goal, selling his Mexican Posole Rojo.

Going for $3 a cup and $5 a bowl, McCleve makes sure his batch of Posole Rojo fills up a 14-quart pot to have enough for the line of everyone wanting to purchase the hearty stew during lunch. Even then, he has run out every time he and his students have sold it.

Students and staff alike enjoy McCleve's Mexican Posole. Sophomore student Emma Beets and Math teacher Tanner Glidden both agree and say "His posole is delicious! It's really savory and flavourful".

McCleve estimates they have made about $400, of which all will be equally distributed to assist the students who helped him sell the Posole during lunch. "Students are enjoying it and I've heard they are surprised it tastes just like their parents Posole".

McCleve who has been planning the itinerary and the details for Spain will also be traveling with the students in the summer. If anyone would like to donate and help students fundraise for the trip, please contact KU Spanish Teacher Jared McCleve at mcclevej@kfalls.k12.or.us or call Klamath Union High School at 541-883-4700.
