New STEM Beyond School after School 4th grade science program at Conger in partnership with the Great outdoor Alliance
The program was opened to all 4th and 5th graders attending Conger. It started on November 29th and will continue through May 30th from 2 pm to 4:30 pm with no classes during upcoming spring break.
The STEM Beyond School Program is sponsored by the 21st Century Community Learning Center, Oregon State University, and the Oregon Department of Education.
This program is an interesting, fun, and challenging 90-hour learning experience, with more than half of the time spent on field trips! Most sessions will be 2.5 hours right after school, with transportation available for current bus riders. There will be at least three 6-8 hour field trips, to be held on grade prep days, conference days, and one Saturday.
Students are using Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to explore their environment (both natural and man-made) through hands-on activities, field studies, and research developing creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and note-taking skills. This program was developed for students who are curious and highly motivated to learn, and who rise to challenges. Students also participate in decision-making about their studies.
This year the program is limited to only 15 participants. Participants were selected based on the quality of their applications and teacher recommendation.
The program is led by Teresa ‘Bird’ Wicks. Bird is the Program Coordinator/Educator for the Great Outdoor Alliance. Bird has a B.S. in Natural Resources: Wildlife Conservation, an M.S. in Environmental Education, and is working on a Ph.D. in Environmental Science. Bird grew up in Josephine County, OR, and spent her childhood roaming the forests of southern Oregon while her father climbed trees to collect cones. An early obsession with birds led to hours of hiking, journaling, and artistic expression. As a scientist, educator, and artist, Bird derives great joy from introducing kids, adults, and families to birds, science, and the many ways nature is intertwined in our daily lives.
